Greetings,
Happy Fall Chester. This is a beautiful time of year in our area with the local farms abundant with pumpkins, apples and cider. We have been surprised by some wonderful warm days and great weekends to enjoy family time. We hope you continue to get outdoors and do something fun.  
 
Our recreation team has been busy organizing many exciting programs for the upcoming months which we know are always well received.  We are bringing you this first ever monthly newsletter filled with recreation happenings so you can be informed and plan ahead.  Don't miss out, jot the events on your calendar today!!

Holiday Laser Light Show ...a huge success!
We hope you were able to get out this past Friday to view our annual holiday laser light show at the Bragg School. The Show was free and open to the public and we had over 200 families in attendance moving and grooving to holiday music and popular tunes. Thanks for making it a huge success by attending our show. Annual Tree Lighting - This weekend!
The 22nd anniversary of the Chester's Christmas Tree Lighting will take place on Sunday, December 6th at 5pm at the Gazebo on Main Street. The tree will be lit and Santa will arrive on a Chester Volunteer Fire Company Fire Engine at 5:30pm. Each child can visit with Santa and refreshments will be served. Open to all. Sponsored by the Chester Garden Club with the help of Chester Borough Recreation Commission. In case of inclement weather prediction, please check website:

Surviving in the Winter World - Free Nature program for kids
ages 4-8 on December 9th from 4:15- 5:15pm at the Field House on Seminary Ave.
Snooze, Cruise, Choose, of Lose? New Jersey's animals all select one of these four behavioral adaptations to deal with winter. Who does what and why? Find out with hands-on activities and touchable nature artifacts. Also their is an outdoor component so please dress appropriate for the weather.  Pre-registration is required as space is limited. No walk-ins will be permitted. Must be a resident of Chester to attend. Parent's are encouraged to attend with younger children.  Pre-register by e-mailing us at :
recreation@chesterborough.org. Please specify in the e-mail your child's name, address, age and if any food allergies as a light, healthy snack will be served.  If parent is not accompanying the child please supply an emergency contact phone number.  Prompt pick-up at end of program is appreciated.

Annual Holiday Lights Decorating Contest -
Our annual, town wide, holiday lights contest will take place from 12/9- 12/19. If interested in entering your home please register by e-mailing Jeanne Montemarano, Township Recreation Director at recreation@chestertownship.org or by calling 908-879-5100 ext. 825.  Please provide your name, address and phone number.  You will receive a confirmation that you are registered and will be advised to pick your laminated sign at Chester Township Municipal Hall from 12/9 - 12/14. Judging will take place from December 14-19th with the winner being announced at a holiday display and get together on Monday December 21st from 7-8pm at the Field House on Seminary Ave. Light refreshments will be served.  Winners announced and prizes awarded at 7:30pm. First Place Prize is $125 gift card, Second Place Prize is $50 gift card, and Third Place Prize is $25 gift card. For more information please contact :

Annual Snowman Decorating Contest -
Go out this Winter and play in the snow, create a snow person and take a picture of your work to enter into our contest!  We are looking for a snow man, snow woman, or snow child, no snow scenes, please! Snow person must be created by children under the age of 16, residing in Chester and must be a current photo taken between the dates of December 2009 and March 2010. All entries must be submitted by hardcopy in the mail by March 5th (no e-mail pictures will be accepted).  Mail to: Maxine at Chester Borough Recreation, 300 Main Street, Chester NJ 07930. Please write your child's name, age, and address on back of photo. Photos will not be returned and become property of the Borough of Chester. Judging panel consists of members from both the Borough and Township recreation committees/commissions.

Winners will be notified at our Welcome to Spring Day on March 20th. This Spring event will include a display of all the photo entries from our contest, announcement of our winners, as well as a Gardening Program for Kids. Spring Event will be held at the field house, more details will be announced at a later date.

Last Call for Bricks in 2009!
Take advantage of this final opportunity to be included in the memorial walkway. Order your customized brick or paver today to memorialize something special, they make great holiday gifts! Bricks will be engraved with your sentiment and will be added to the brick pathway at the Grove Street Park. Chester DragonRiders is a family oriented mountain biking club, sponsored by the Chester Township Recreation Department and Chester Borough Recreation Commission. Their goal is to introduce children to the sport of mountain biking and develop their skills in a fun, social and supportive setting.  During the riding season, they meet weekly for rides every Saturday at 9:30 am. Each child must be accompanied by an adult (maximum 2 kids per adult). Children of all ages are welcome (no training wheels, please). The group is split  by age and skill levels, as appropriate based on each week's attendance. Annual family membership fee of $20 covers skill clinics, liability insurance, and a 15% discount on bike accessories at Cycle Craft and Marty's Reliable Cycle.  What you need: a bike in safe working order (kids' bike with 'fat' tires or mountain bike) and an approved bike helmet. Visit Cycle Craft or Marty's for a complimentary bike safety check. Rides typically take place at Lewis Morris Park in Mendham or Tiger Brook Park in Chester.

AboutChester Borough Recreation Commission
Chester Borough Recreation is comprised of seven members who are citizens in residence in the borough and one recreation director. The Commission is responsible for formulating plans for the development and improvement of our public park and playground lands including maintenance, care and improvements as well as formulating rules and regulations and events.
